Music Feature: "The reason I started listening to music" by Shola Aleje

Author: Shola Aleje

There are many bands that got me really into music, I grew up on artist such as Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Motown. After successfully raiding my Dad's record collection I found a record which was completely different from the others; Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music - The Best Of. I know that the only people who don't like best of albums are music journalists and hard-core record shop entrepreneurs, but hey, you gotta start somewhere.

I blew the dust off the vinyl sleeve and looked closely at the date my father bought it, 18/5/1985, two months before i was born. Before I even knew what guitar sounds were I was hooked, I remember getting this strange urge to jump around when I heard "Love is the Drug" and Bryan Ferry's footsteps towards his car. The lyrics "I say go she say yes/dim the lights you can guess the rest" made me scream in awe and Bryan Ferry's voice was very mesmerising. I knew from there that there had to be more music out there that sound as brilliant as this......and there was PLENTY!

From then on i never looked back, my dads vinyl collection has now become mine because all the records are in my room. I started reading plenty of music magazines started writing and buying loads of cds. The Clash, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chili peppers made me realise that there is life beyond Eastenders. I haven't watched that program in a year.

Music is a wonderful time when you can really let out your emotions- there are songs that make me cry (Foreigner - I want to know what love is, The Cranberries -Linger), songs that make you laugh - Eminem - Lose it, Who Knew and songs that make you wanna shove two fingers up at the world (Evanescene - Going under, The Clash - London Calling).

And as for most fanciable rock star? Morrissey, Felix Buxton of Basement Jaxx and Graham Coxon (Blur) - for being so effortlessly sexy.
