Live Review: Elbow at London Shepherds Bush Empire - 6th September 2004

Author: Shola Aleje

It took almost two hours for acoustic rockers Elbow to take the stage with flashing blue and white lights, but it was definitely worth the wait. A roar of undeniable excitement erupted through the audience as "Fallen Angel" was performed, it's easy to see why Elbow are previous Mercury Award Nominees.

Distorted electronic sounds and more up tempo beats, their second album "Cast Of Thousands" definitely showed that they are more than just "another indie group". At times they toned it down with performances from first album "Asleep in The Back", showing their softer side with bittersweet melodies.

Front man Guy Garvey interacted extremely well with the audience cracking jokes (dirty ones at times, but I won't go into too much detail!), and making everyone feel at ease. With constant comparisons to Coldplay echoing through their performance with soulful ballads and amazing guitar solos, I was truly impressed with the five piece band from Manchester.

Support band 13 Senses were just as good giving the performances of their lives with their amazing stage presence and rock-strewn sounds. Great night, great band, and to top it all off Connor from Irish band the Thrills was sitting right next to me. RESULT!!
